TOUR - Going Green in the Flatiron District more info Sunday, October 17, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Going Green in the Flatiron District This tour considers retrofitting for sustainability at two scales: that of an office and of an entire building. At 200 Fifth Ave. (LEED Gold) bronze curtain walls and bronze-clad sashes have all been replaced, while at the architectural offices of Cook+Fox (LEED-CI Platinum), the changes include a daylight-based lighting plan, low VOC materials, denim insulation, and waterless urinals, which have helped reduce potable water use by 40%. A 3600 square foot green roof is visible from within the workspace, serving as both appealing symbol and a means to reduce rainwater run-off. Fee: $20 for conference participants. Can old buildings play a role in making New York a more sustainable city?

Speakers at the Conference on Preservation and Climate Change in New York City will explore the green opportunity in New York’s older buildings and how preservation can be integrated into the city’s climate change, green building and sustainability agendas. The conference is co-sponsored by The Municipal Art Society of New York and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Panels and lectures include:

Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change, addressing how the impact of climate change will affect New York City’s cultural, historic and architectural resources;

Case Studies in High-Performance Preservation Retrofits, looking at best practices in bringing together preservation and energy efficiency;

LEED and Beyond, examining the array of standards and financial incentives that can help guide and encourage energy retrofits and how they work with historic buildings; and

PlaNYC 2.0, David Bragdon, the newly appointed director of the Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, will discuss how New York City’s sustainability plan will be updated this year, and what new areas may be added to the plan.

AIA/APA Credits available! Architects and planners can earn continuing education credits at the Conference on Preservation and Climate Change in New York City. Architects can earn 6.0 sustainable design credits, thereby fulfilling a year’s requirements from the AIA. Attendant’s will also earn 6.0 Learning Unit credits and 6.0 Health, Safety and Welfare credits. APA New York Metro Chapter is currently seeking Certification Maintenance credits for this event.

The October 16 conference will be kicked off on Friday, October 15 with a keynote on Cities and Sustainability, followed by a festive reception. On Sunday, October 17 MAS will host a series of tours that highlight best practices of historic preservation and sustainability in New York City and the surrounding region.

Who should attend? The conference is geared toward policy-makers, architects, environmentalists, planners, preservationists and anyone interested in urban sustainability and preservation.
